Buongiorno! If you’re a lover of all things Italian – that’s amore! – this one’s for you. This month we’re celebrating Domayne’s exquisite collection of Italian made leather furniture showcased in this fabulous Italian Made magazine feature. And we’re not alone in our appreciation of magnifica Italia. From furniture and fashion to food and art, Director of Media, Public Affairs and Brand Development at ACP Magazines Deborah Thomas reveals her passion for Milan, Rome - and everything in between.
“I am a self-confessed lover of everything Italian – the food, the people, the country and of course the designers. Armani, Prada, Gucci, Pucci, Versace, Fendi, Dolce and Gabanna … some of the best names in international fashion were conceived in Italy. Yes, the Italians really do have an innate sense of style that permeates everything they do – from a simple setting for lunch at the local tavola, to the most elegant boutique on the Via Condotti in Rome. It really is La Dolce Vita from Venzia in the north to Sicilia in the south. Then again, the Italians have been perfecting their sense of style, art and craftsmanship for centuries. If you don’t believe me, just take a stroll around the centre of Florence or the Piazza Saint Marco in Venice. But that was then and this is now. The tradition of beautiful and practical design, combined with the very best craftsmanship and innovation, is just as much a part of 2012 as it was in the Renaissance when Italy led the way in architecture, art, science and design.
I was lucky enough to live in Milan for a year during my 20s and everyday was a treat strolling the streets of this bustling industrial city, obsessed with being recognised by the cognoscenti as the centre for modern furniture and fashion. The status remains and Milan is still the European centre for showcasing innovative design. What I particularly love is the blend of modern and traditional pieces: a contemporary and practical leather sofa next to a quirky 1930’s bureau in a 19th century villa. For me fashion and furniture should be an eclectic mix of old and new. In fashion, old may be just five months, five years or even a decade, ago – so long as it’s still a much-loved piece its fine. My favourite accessories include a limited collection of beautiful Italian handbags. Those that seemed so expensive at the time, a decade later look like great value, particularly a classic Prada I bought as an early adopter in 1988. Made from exquisite high-polished leather it’s as fabulous now as it was 24 years earlier. And furniture? I particularly love mid-20th century pieces and slick modern classics. I also love leather for sofas as it gets better with wear and I don’t have to be too precious. And the best leather comes from you know where…Italy. Viva Italia – you inspire many and make life sweeter for us all.”
