Freestanding baths are an easy way to add an element of luxury and indulgence to any bathroom. The bath has become the centrepiece of the modern bathroom – a point proven by the stunning bathrooms created by the finalists in the 2017 edition of the Victoria + Albert @ Domayne Bathroom Design Competition.
Now in its second year, this competition was inspired by the partnership between Domayne and Luxe By Design, the Australian distributor of Victoria + Albert Baths. To be eligible to enter the competition, participants had to send in photos of their newly-installed Victoria + Albert bath tub that they had purchased from the Domayne stores in Alexandria or Auburn. The prize? Winning back the cost of their Victoria + Albert bath.
The judging panel consisted of Elie Habib (head of Domayne Bathrooms), Michael Swyny (general manager of Luxe by Design), Lisa Green (editor-in-chief of Australian House & Garden magazine), architect Virginia Kerridge, and Brad Costello (Bathroom proprietor at Domayne Auburn). With so many amazing bathrooms to choose from, just deciding on a shortlist would have been tough enough – let alone choosing a winner from the final three. But a winner must be chosen, and the announcement took place on December 13th in the Victoria + Albert showroom at Domayne Alexandria at 84 O’Riordan Street.
When asked what they were looking for in a bathroom, the judges specified the combination of elements that drew their attention.
“It’s about the layout. The ease of use. The combination of colour palette and luxury finish,” said Lisa Green.
For Michael Swyny, bathrooms are very much a private space.
“It’s where you’re at your most bare and exposed,” said Michael. “There are more mirrors in the bathroom than the rest of the house, so you want the space to be calm and inviting – a real retreat. We’re very fortunate to be able to have those spaces in our homes.”
After some tough deliberation, the judges were pleased to announce the winners, with Gina Valis in 1st place, Eric Brown and Manuela De Rossi in 2nd place, and Adriana Portolesi in 3rd place.
Gina Valis’ winning bathroom was originally a bedroom that had been converted during renovations. The light and open space is certainly breathtaking, with the judges being particularly impressed with the sheer size and extravagance of the space. The Terrassa bath tub from Victoria + Albert is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the spectacular views of the Georges Rivers.
Gina was delighted to win the competition, and couldn’t be more satisfied with the results of her bathroom renovation.
“It feels great to win. We changed the layout a few times during the planning stage, but we’re really happy with the result.”
The bathroom was designed around the Victoria + Albert Terrassa bath, which was an absolute must-have for Gina. “I just love it. The shape of it, the size, the depth and the material.”
So pleased with the result of the renovations, Gina is gearing up to work on her ensuite next.
“We’ve got another bathroom to do, and we’ll definitely do it with Domayne.”
Second place winners Eric Brown and Manuela De Rossi wanted a bathroom retreat that had an element of romance about it and that felt like a luxury hotel suite. The key elements to getting that first-class finish? The Napoli bath and matching basin from Victoria + Albert.
Boldly designed as a low slung shell, the Napoli bath features a rimless lip and low profile proportions for an easy step-in, and subtle curves for a supremely comfortable bathing position.
“The bath looks great and is very practical at the same time. I absolutely love it,” said Eric. “It has the right angles that make it feel like it’s been moulded to my body. I’m in there every chance I get. Bath salts, book, wine – shut the door and relax.”
When deciding where to shop, Eric and Manuela had range and convenience foremost in mind. That’s why they went with the team at Domayne Alexandria.
“They have a really big range in here, and the showroom really gives you a feel for the products. A lot of places have the baths without any taps or tiles, and having those things in place really gives you an idea of how they’re going to fit inside the room,” said Eric.
“We jumped into every single bath – myself, my wife, and the kids – to find a bath that felt right for everyone.”
Third place winner Adriana Portolesi was after a contemporary design for her new bathroom.
“We really wanted that spa feeling,” said Adriana. “A place where it feels like you’re getting away from it all.”
With the bold slate tiles and timber accents, this bathroom provides a space where you can forget the outside world and indulge your senses. With further plans to create a vertical garden just outside the window to complete that sense of a spa retreat, the centrepiece of the room is the Barcelona bath from Victoria + Albert.
“It all came down to the bath,” said Adriana. “The clean lines match with the contemporary design of the rest of the house. It’s the biggest of the range, and the shape of it looks good by itself.”
